Letter from Bob Lenarduzzi, Whitecaps President
Hello Burnaby Girls,

With Vancouver now less than a year away from its inaugural season in Major League Soccer (MLS). It’s an exciting time for our sport, and our community - and we want the members of Burnaby Girls right there with us when we kick off our inaugural season.

As you’ve likely heard, we’ve had exceptional demand for tickets from the public (almost 80% have already been sold), however we felt it was important to ensure we offer the opportunity for youth soccer clubs to be a part of the MLS experience. To make sure as many young athletes, fans and families have the opportunity to experience MLS in person, we’ve set aside a special section for youth soccer clubs where all season tickets will be available for just $319. You can secure season tickets in this section now with a $50 deposit.

We’re extending this offer exclusively to clubs we’ve worked with over the years.

Please feel free to contact Hugh Hamilton, our club’s Soccer Ambassador today at 778.330.1360 or
hhamilton@whitecapsfc.com to process your deposits or answer any questions you may have.

Once again, thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Bob Lenarduzzi
President, Vancouver Whitecaps FC

Burnaby Girls Soccer Club Commits to Right To Play

Burnaby Girls Soccer Club Commits to Right To Play

(Burnaby, BC, June 2010) – Burnaby Girls Soccer Club has committed to support Right To Play.

Burnaby Girls Soccer Club has always supported to both local and international charities. Local charities like Kidsport BC and international charities like the Kenya Project. Our decision to support Right to Play shows our continued commitment to non-profit charities. BGSC's motto “A Place for Every Girl to Play” fits very well with Right To Play and their vision “To create a healthier and safer world through the power of sport and play”.

BGSC Club History

BGSC was formed in the 1991/92 season as a group of parents and coaches interested in promoting girls soccer pushed for separation from the existing boys’ clubs in Burnaby. The girls from Edmonds, Burnaby Heights, South Burnaby, and Wesburn joined together under the banner of the Burnaby Girls Soccer Club. Holding as its motto – A Place for Every Girl to Play – the club strived to offer a full program including mini soccer, and at the divisional level – Metro, Gold, Silver and Bronze teams. We, at BGSC, remain proud of our accomplishments and the traditions started by those founders years ago.

We will remain committed to their vision, and thank all of those who have volunteered to organize, coach, and assist, in all forms to make BSGC the force it remains today. We are proud to be Burnaby's only All Girls Soccer Club!

About Right To Play

Right To Play is an international humanitarian organization that uses sport and play programs to improve health, develop life skills, and foster peace for children and communities in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the world. Working in both the humanitarian and development context, Right To Play builds local capacity by training community leaders as Coaches to deliver its programs in 23 countries affected by war, poverty, and disease in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and South America. Founded in 2000, Right To Play is headquartered in Toronto, Canada and has national offices in Canada, Norway, The Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The national offices raise funds, build awareness for Right To Play programs and advocate for Sport for Development.

Spring/Summer Soccer Program

BGSC Spring /Summer Soccer Program

This program would be geared towards the Bronze level players as the Gold and Silver teams are set in the spring and tend to start practicing right away. The bronze teams are usually slower to get going so the girls finish the season in March and do not "put foot to ball" again until September.

We would like to change that!

The girls would run through a warm up and then work on drills to improve their skills. At the end of the night we would play a scrimmage where we would stop the play to talk about positioning, choices etc.

Please see "Development Programs" to register

If you have any questions please contact Stephen Price

The sessions will be designed to be fun, engaging and positive.  It will begin to teach the very basics of dribbling, passing, shooting and sportsmanship.  Above all, we want the girls to have fun and enjoy the sport of soccer.  Burnaby Girls Micro Head Coach, Sandi Sparks, will run the sessions but parent volunteers will be asked to help with the games and activities.

This program is available to all girls born in 2005

BGSC Burnaby United - Nationals Update
Nationals Updates

BGSC United got off to a great start at the u18 Sony nationals today Wednesday Oct 7th in Edmonton Alberta winning a spirted affair against the squad from Sask.2nil.Alisha Penev opened the scoring on a lovely tipin from a free kick taken by Tessa Barbour 30 minutes in. In the second half United  scored again when Amy Lawrence was sent in on a breakaway on a skillful passing play by Katey Reilly and Alisha Penev. The game was played on a wonderful grass pitch with a brisk wind and a chilly temperature.Next up PEI

Game 1 - BGSC Burnaby United 2  Sask 0

Under the most extreme conditions imaginable the United toughed out their second win of the Nationals today in Edmonton. With a wind chill of minus 13 and a continious wind with gusts and at times horz snow fluries the game was more a contest of stanima than soccer.Tessa Barbour was sent in by Lyanne Gannon and slid it by the keeper for the first score.United went up 2 nil when Katey Reilly received a pass by Milela Bertelli and chipped in for the score. The second half saw Burnaby facing a bitter wind ,dispite this we managed to mount several attacks,It was a gritty effort with all the parents present(a considerable force)very ..impressed.We look forward to playing Quebec tomorrow

Game 2 - BGSC Burnaby United 2  PEI 1

The united took another step towards their ultimate goal today with a nail biting 1 nil victory over a very talented Quebec squad today. With 2 minutes left in the game united crossed the ball and in the insuing scramble Sage Rinaldo with cool accurcey scored the goal.It had been a seesaw battle up to that point with Quebec mounting charge after charge but the back line of Melina Gomez in goal and Jenna Piovesan,Abbey Vogt.Sage Rinaldo and Merissa Di lorenzo holding the line. Morgan Ellis had a steller game on the wing.Today the girls of Burbaby United learned that there are many ways to make a contribution to a win and in their own way each did what was asked of by the coaching staff We look forward to closing off the round robin portion of with a game against Nova Scotia

Burnaby Girls Soccer Club and Burnaby Canadians FC Merge
Burnaby Girls Soccer Club and Burnaby Canadians FC Merge

We are proud to announce the formation of the BGSC Canadians FC women's soccer club. The newly branded club will build on the historically successful programs of the Burnaby Canadians FC and the strong and developing programs of the Burnaby Girls Soccer Club to build and grow women's soccer in the City of Burnaby. The two club executive committees unanimously approved the merger of the Burnaby Girls Soccer Club women's program and the Burnaby Canadians FC program in March 2009. This is an exciting development for women's soccer in Burnaby. The new club will be fielding 8 teams (4 from BGSC and 4 from the Canadians) with the possibility of a 9th Premier level team made up of former BGSC players.

The Burnaby Canadians FC's inception back was in 1976. The club has won an Imperial Cup (with our VMSL Premier Men's Team) and three National Championships (by our Women's and Metro Youth Boy's Teams). We were a charter member of the Vancouver Metro Men's Soccer League and continue to sponsor our women's programs within the Metro Women's Soccer League. In 2008/2009, the Canadians became a Women's only club and focused on expanding women's programs in the future for independant Burnaby-based women's teams. As part of expanding the program, the Burnaby Canadians FC approached BGSC looking to see if there were ways for the two clubs to work together.

The Burnaby Girls Soccer Club was formed in the 1991/92 season as a group of parents and coaches interested in promoting girls soccer pushed for separation from the existing boys’ clubs in Burnaby. The girls from Edmonds, Burnaby Heights, South Burnaby, and Wesburn soccer clubs joined together under the banner of the Burnaby Girls Soccer Club. Holding as its motto – A Place for Every Girl to Play – the club strives to offer a full program including mini soccer, and at the divisional level – Metro, Gold, Silver and Bronze teams. In recent years, graduating teams from BGSC asked to remain with the club as Women's teams which was fully supported by the club executive. Adding the Burnaby Canadians FC women's teams to the existing BGSC Women's teams will create a vibrant new place for women's soccer in Burnaby.

Over the next year, the two clubs (youth and adult) will work together to merge our programs for women and rebrand the club as the "BGSC Canadians FC". To facilitate this work, Dick Fryatt, President Burnaby Canadians FC has invited Leo de Sousa, President of Burnaby Girls Soccer Club to join the Burnaby Canadians FC board. Look for more exciting announcements over the next year, as our club merges and grows to deliver a full women's soccer program!

Technical Program Updates
December 5th - Technical Program Updates

GOALKEEPER DEVELOPMENTAL SESSION ADDED

On November 29, we used an extra hour of indoor turf time at Canlan 8 rinks to offer a one hour indoor training session for BGSC U11 to U18 goalkeepers.  We had great turnout, and have obtained another hour of indoor time for another session.  Here are the details:

WHAT:  Goalkeeper training session with Serge and Cassie

WHEN:  December 13, 3:00pm-4:00pm

WHO:  All BGSC U11 through U18 keepers

WHERE:  Canlan 8 rinks indoor turf field

ACADEMY SESSION POSTPONED

I have heard from quite a few parents that the last Friday night academy session on December 19 would be difficult to attend due to holiday functions.  So, we will NOT be running an academy session on Dec 19 and will add that session on as a make-up session towards the end of the academy program.

COACHES KICKAROUND

On December 6, the club is running their annual coaches kickaround for all BGSC coaches to have a fun session indoors followed by a social upstairs afterwards.  I will be running a 30 minute warm-up from 3:15-3:45pm to show some warm-up drills that coaches can use before their training or games.  Of course, this also serves another purpose to warm all the coaches up for the kickaround game from 3:45-5:00pm.  This takes place at the indoor turf field at Canlan 8 rinks.

ACADEMY DATES TO KNOW

The last Friday night academy training session before the holiday break is December 12.  The first Friday night session back after the break is January 9.

The last Saturday afternoon academy training session before the holiday break is December 13.  The first Saturday session back after the break is January 10.

TUESDAY NIGHT GOALKEEPER PROGRAM

The last Tuesday night goalkeeper session before the holiday break is December 9.  The first Tuesday goalkeeper session after the break is January 13.

SPRING BREAK CAMP

We have had great feedback to a possible spring break camp, and are going ahead with a morning camp March 16-20 in Burnaby.  This will be an “all-girls” camp with age groups from U6-U14 and we’ll have female staff, run on a turf field, have great daily prizes, and have structured sessions combining skill development with enjoyment during the school break.  Registration and further information will be on our website in the coming weeks.

TD WILL BE AWAY

In case any of you need to get a hold of me in the near future, please note that I will be out of the country from Dec 7-14 and Dec 23-Jan 1 and during that time I won’t have access to email or messages.

Technical Program Updates
November 4th – Technical programs update

BGSC Players, Coaches and Parents

November 4 – Technical programs update

NUTRITION SEMINAR - THIS WEEKEND!
A reminder the nutrition seminar takes place this Sunday, November 9, at 7:00pm. Bonsor Recreation Centre is the location, and you should go to the “arts room” on the 2nd floor.
The topic will be nutrition for growing female athletes with a segment on pre/during/post competition eating. Our presenter is Jennifer Gibson who is a registered dietitian from SportMed BC and she has worked with the national teams of women’s soccer and softball, and the Whitecaps professional and youth teams. U11 and up players, parents, and coaches are all welcome....and the seminar is FREE with no pre-registration required. The presentation will be on a projector/screen but feel free to bring a notepad. I’ve put on a few of these with Jennifer in the past and they are always informative and useful.

ACADEMY UPDATE - WINTER SESSION REGISTRATION ACCEPTED SOON!

We recently consolidated our Tuesday and Friday night groups into just a Friday night option. This will only make our academy program stronger over time and will ensure standards can be met as we progress. We are nearing the end of the first 10 academy sessions and we will be accepting registrations for the 10 winter sessions that continue on in a couple weeks. This registration link will be on our website by November 15 so if you missed out on the academy that started in early September you can still join! We have spots in the U8-U11 groups on Saturday afternoons indoors at Canlan 8rinks.....the 10 winter sessions would start on Nov 29 for these groups. We also have space for U13 or U14 players and U12-U18 goalkeepers in the Friday night sessions at Burnaby Lake West, and the 10 winter sessions would start on Dec 5 for this group. Please contact me for full program dates or more information.

TEAM TRAINING PROGRAM

A reminder that all divisional U11-U18 teams can receive up to 6 training sessions throughout the season with our technical staff coaches. Micro/mini teams also receive development sessions and these are arranged through Sandi. We’ve already worked with most teams, but please encourage your coach to take advantage of this supplementary technical team training. We can come to your regular training sessions or bring your team out for a turf session on Tuesday and Friday nights.

PROPER SIDELINE ETIQUETTE

I have visited many games in the last few weeks and one thing has struck me in quite a few of the games. And this is the proper etiquette from our coaches and parents during games. I’ve witnessed coaches walking up and down questioning referee decisions while actually being 10 yards on the field of play, parents constantly coaching their children away from earshot of their coach, and some very harsh language towards referees. Please remember the games don’t take place without the officials and they deserve the respect of all players, parents, and coaches. I was surprised to hear some very negative comments yelled from the sidelines and these were in U11 and U13 games I witnessed....a very poor example to our players. After a game, referees are to be thanked for their efforts with a handshake by coaches and players, and not verbally assaulted by coaches and parents about how you may have felt they refereed the game. We have referee evaluation reports that coaches can fill out....so if you are a parent with a concern about a game official, please encourage your coach to fill out a form and this goes both ways....and by that I mean that we tend to only complain in writing if we didn’t like the referee but I encourage you to submit an evaluation form after every game even if you thought the referee did a great job!
I’d also like to stress that coaches should coach and parents should cheer! That is the structure on the sidelines....if you have coaching input to provide to players on your team, including your own daughter, please offer to assist your coach as I’m sure they’d value the help!

SPRING BREAK CAMP

It is a long ways off, but I’ve already had a few parents ask me if we’ll be running a spring break camp....and I’m excited to announce that, yes, we will run a morning camp over March 16-20. This camp will feature U9 to U14 house levels and U11 to U14 select groups. I am considering which age group we should actually start at, so I’d love to hear from the U6-U9 parents as to whether they’d be interested in a spring break camp if we added the youngest age groups in the club. We’ll also offer things such as daily drink boxes, daily soccer themed prizes, female staff, first aid kit on site, and free camp t-shirts....and we’ll make it one of the lowest priced camps ever seen for a quality camp development program!

Yours in development.

BGSC U18 Titans at Nationals
Titans get Silver at the Nationals

Monday October 13th

The BC Titans played in the Gold Medal game against Alberta Calgary Foothills at noon on a very pleasant and warm day.

The Titans came in second with the Silver medal and played a good game.

We are very proud of our group of a young ladies who have finished off their soccer season with a silver medal at the Canadian Nationals - the girls played a very strong tournament with 4 wins and 1 loss - they had 20 goals for and 5 against. Our Burnaby Titans Janine Frazao won the golden boot for the most goals in the tournament.

Another wonderful and talented group of girls have now gone on to the next step of their lives and have been proud to be a Burnaby Girls Titan.

October 10 – Technical programs update

BGSC Players, Coaches and Parents

October 10Technical programs update

ACADEMY
As per the academy schedule, this is a reminder there are no academy training sessions this Friday and Saturday, October 10 and 11, due to the Thanksgiving weekend. All academy sessions return next week at their regular time. All academy players should have their training t-shirts by now....please wear these to all academy sessions.

MINI GOALKEEPER SESSION
On October 18, the club is hosting a goalkeeper session for all mini goalkeepers. We have adjusted the format slightly from what was originally announced. We'd like mini coaches and/or parents interested in learning the basic goalkeeping skills to attend from 5-6pm, followed by the U8-U10 interested girls attending from 6-7pm. In the 6-7pm slot, the coaches/parents will actually coach the girls with the basics they learned, with direction from Darren Woloshen who is the Whitecaps youth program and former women's goalkeeper coach. A revised registration link will be up after the Thanksgiving weekend. The location of this session on Oct 18 is at Byrne Creek.

NUTRITION SEMINAR

This talk will focus on general nutritional guidelines and also discuss pre/during/post competition eating habits and suggestions for soccer players....the suggested age range to attend is for U12 girls and up and parents are invited to attend as well. Jennifer Gibson from SportMed BC is a registered dietitian who has worked with the national teams in women's soccer and women's softball, and the women's professional tennis tour. MARK YOUR CALENDARS: November 9 from 7pm-8:30pm. Location: Bonsor Recreation Complex, Arts Room, 2nd floor.

Good luck in your Thanksgiving weekend tournaments and games!

BGSC U18 Titans win first game at Nationals

Sunday October 5th - The Titans met together for a practice and info meeting to prepare for their trip on Tuesday morning October 7th to Nationals in Ontario.  It is exciting because the team has not seen one another or played as one since winning the Provincials on July 6th.  Lots of preparation being done in the background by the coaching staff Harv and Tony to make sure that this will be a great and memorable trip for the girls.

Tuesday October 7th - Vancouver airport at 6am is a group of young ladies minus the ones that are studying either back east or in the States - in their Burnaby Girls Titans red and black tracksuits - looking sharp and ready to represent their province at the Canadian Nationals.
A group of approximately 40 people (players and families)  from BC have arrived at Toronto, Ontario to an airport full of young soccer players from all the other provinces - it is an exciting atomsphere and everyone tries to check out where each team is coming from.

We head to our hotels and have a team meeting that evening and it is great to have the team together and see our young ladies who have gone on to life in the adult world of further education and work.

Wednesday October 8th - game day - our first game of the tournament and we play the Lakers from Quebec - a strong team that we have heard alot about and they just finished playing about two weeks ago so they are ready to go.
It was an exciting game with a win for the Burnaby Titans 4 - 1.  It was a strong physical game and our girls did a great job in getting this win.

Thursday October 9th - the girls have been given the day off to enjoy the sights and relax with their families/team mates.

Friday October 10th - we will be playing Prince Edward Island

Former BGSC Player Scoring Threat
Rachel Harker nets three goals;LIONS CRUISE

Roberto Mazza thinks Rachel Harker could eventually turn into one of his team’s most consistent scoring threats.

He only says eventually because, through Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s first six soccer games this season, the freshman from Canada has usually been tied up in the midfield, defending the other team’s pressure and trying to give possession back to the Golden Lions.

Tuesday, in UAPB’s first home game in almost two weeks against Crichton College, Harker broke out of her offensive shell. She scored three goals in the first half and added an assist in UAPB’s 7-0 win over the Comets, an NAIA school from Memphis.

The win equals UAPB’s (2-5-1) total from all of last season, Mazza’s first.

“She’s a two-way player,” Mazza said. “Very good defensively, very good going forward. She can make things happen.”

The problem is, Mazza has had trouble finding good times for Harker to attack during games. When teams attack toward UAPB’s goal, Harker is much more valuable as a defender, trying to limit such scoring opportunities.

Yesterday’s game, played mostly toward Crichton’s goal, provided Harker with more opportunities than she has had all season against the Comets, one of two teams UAPB beat last year, and was the victim of Mazza’s first win.

The first goal of Harker’s career came in the 18th minute and sailed just over the outstretched hands of Crichton goalkeeper Sarah Harrison to make it 2-0. That came eight minutes after Jade West extender her conference points lead with a 10th-minute goal to make it 1-0.

Harker’s goal also was the first of three UAPB scored in 71 seconds to extend its lead to 4-0. West followed Harker’s first goal with her second when a Nicole Parks-Powell shot was blocked by Harrison and West slipped it into the left side of the net to make it 3-0.

Harker scored twice more in the half, the first coming in the 21st minute on an assist from Courtney Godfrey and later on a pass from Shantel Brown which made it 5-0 at halftime.

“If it happens it happens,” said Harker of trying to score more goals.

“My job is to make plays. If I get a goal I’m thankful for anything I get. But I’m happy with what I’ve been doing.”

Mazza would like to have more consistent scoring threats to compliment forwards West and Parks-Powell, who until Tuesday had scored all of UAPB’s goals. But, especially considering SWAC play begins Friday at Jackson State, that might not be possible.

“The midfield is probably one of the toughest positions on the field to defend,” he said. “And if we’re getting attacked, we’ve got to defend.”

Mazza has seen his team get better this season, and he’s sticking by his preseason goal of advancing to the conference tournament for the first time in program history.

Weekly TD Update
Weekly TD Update

A message from Burnaby Girls Soccer Club...

BGSC coaches,

As we are almost a month into the season now, I wanted to send you some items for your review:

MICRO/MINI PROGRAM
I am very happy with the direction that is evolving with our micro/mini program. With Sandi contracted to work exclusively coaching with these age groups, there has been some great guidance to the teams this year in terms of running structured practices and assisting new coaches to "get their feet wet" with mini coach education sessions. Of course there are always things that come up as we progress through the early stages of a season, so here are a few key things we have worked on:

  •   A mini goalkeeper clinic is confirmed for Oct 18 so mark your calendar. From 5pm-6pm, we are inviting U8/U9/U10 girls interested in learning the basics to come out for a "hands on" session. From 6pm-7pm, we are running a coach education session on the proper things to teach your girls in the goalkeeper position...again, this will be "hands on" so be prepared to participate. Both sessions take place at Byrne Creek.
  • Goalkeepers at U7. It has been an interesting topic with many points on either side of the debate. As a technical staff, we have given the direction that introducing goalkeepers at this age is important for future development of the girls in that position, and for the overall comfort level of girls being rotated into that position that will pay dividends in the future. Coaching points at this level should be very basic with such direction to the keepers as "pick it up and roll it to your player" or "drop the ball when no-one is around you and kick it to your player"......please don't get into heavy coaching about kicking it from their hands, or technique on diving or getting down to their knees. Simply let them know they can pick up the ball and should try to pass it to a team mate....anything more than that will be introduced at U8/U9.
  • Nets at U7 - please ensure the frames on the goals for your U7 games are "extended" fully so all teams are playing with the same size goal.
  • Number of players at U10. This topic recently came to the executive in the form of a request to have teams play 7 a-side instead of the present 6 a-side. A few points need to be brought to light to understand the direction we are keeping with. First off, as part of my TD role, I am working on a longer term 3 year plan for the club so making a change this soon into my tenure was not desired. I also feel strongly that players should touch the ball as much as possible, and keeping the current 6 a-side model will encourage more involvement from all the girls. Going to 7 players simply means an extra player that needs to try and get involved and with only one ball I simply can't agree that more players will equal more touches for every girl. In many world soccer powers such as Holland and Germany, players often play 4 or 5 a-side until they are 10 or 11 years old....all in the name of letting players get more involved and giving them more involvement in the game. While the BCSA has a few papers out with recommendations on various things, we are not mandated to play with a certain number of players so for this season at least, we will still play 6 a-side. As part of my 3 year planning process, I will be considering many things including the optimum number of players on the field for the best player development opportunity at each age from U6 to U10.
  • Coach Certification. There are many courses that clubs and the BCSA host regularly to get coaches certified. The CCY ("Community Coach Youth" for U6-U10 coaches which is an 8 hour course) is something we'd like all coaches to obtain throughout the fall/winter. This is the first level of official certification through the BCSA and the available courses are listed on their website. We may look to host our own certification course this season, but presently there are CCY and CCS courses in the community hosted by a few different clubs. Of course the BGSC will reimburse you upon completion of a course.

GOALKEEPER PROGRAM

Many of your keepers have participated in the first month of the Tuesday night keeper sessions at Byrne Creek. It is not too late for your keepers to attend, and the turnout has been great so far. A reminder the U11-U13 session is from 5:45-7:00 and the U14-U18 session is from 7:00-8:15.

NUTRITION SEMINAR
With nutrition not only important for athletes in general but also for growing females, we are hosting a special seminar on nutrition for growing female athletes. This talk will focus on general nutritional guidelines and also discuss pre/during/post competition eating habits and suggestions for soccer players. Jennifer Gibson from SportMed BC is a registered dietitian who has worked with the national teams in women's soccer and women's softball, and the women's professional tennis tour. MARK YOUR CALENDARS: November 9 from 7pm-8:30pm. Location tba.

TEAM TRAINING PROGRAM
Many U11-U18 teams have taken advantage of technical sessions with myself or our BGSC staff coaches. A reminder you are allotted up to 6 sessions throughout the season. Some of you have already had 2 or 3 sessions, and others have yet to book a date. Simply contact me to arrange a Tuesday or Friday during our turf time, or we'll come to you!

TIP OF THE WEEK
Be organized to utilize your space! Many of us end up with a small area for training, perhaps only 1/4 of a field...most training sessions progress from a small warmup into mid-sized themed drills and then into a larger game situation....to utilize your space try thinking backwards when planning your training session. That is, if you will finish with a game in a 40X30 area, lay that square out first....if your middle drills are in 15x15 or 20x20 areas, lay those next inside the larger area....and if you are starting with a smaller spaced warmup area such as Coerver footskills or drills, lay those cones last in the centre of the larger areas you had created. Then as you progress from start to finish you simply just pick up the smaller areas until you end in the largest space. This will save you time and effort moving around the whole field trying to lay out enough areas within your limited space.

As many of you know, the Whitecaps season is almost over with the semi-final playoffs this weekend. I plan on visiting many of your games once my weekend time is freed up from my "other job" (at the latest next weekend if we make the final!)....so I look forward to seeing your teams play and to discuss some ideas to get the most out of your team during games.

I look forward to seeing you on the field!

Regards,

Matt Holbrook

- We had our first fall coach education session this past Friday night with a "footskills" session....and your coach might have been one of the 47 in attendance that worked on their skills so that they are ready to work on your skills! We followed the field session with an "injury treatment" session for coaches and managers. Well done to all the coaches who attended and picked up a few things for their coaching toolbox.

- The club provided technical training sessions for teams has started. If your team isn't booked, ask your coach to schedule a session today! This program ensures your team receives extra technical training on various topics from our staff coaches. If you have any questions on any technical programs, please contact me.

Burnaby Girls Soccer Club Announces Enhanced Technical Program!
Burnaby Girls Soccer Club announces enhanced technical program!

With a desire to grow the development offerings to Burnaby Girls Soccer Club players and coaches, the club is pleased to announce the initial highlights of the club’s technical program.

Matt Holbrook has been appointed as the BGSC Technical Director.  Matt is currently the Manager of Youth Development for the Vancouver Whitecaps and brings extensive  experience in the local soccer community, including as the TD for BGSC over a one year period approximately 5 years ago.  Matt’s coached at every level from high school and club soccer to the BC provincial team and in Whitecaps Super Y and academy programs.  Matt recently spent a year in Ottawa as the GM of the Ottawa Fury Soccer Club where he managed the daily and long term growth of the business and soccer operations of the club.

Matt’s first task as the BGSC’s new TD was to find and hire a Mini Head Coach who will have exclusive duties working with coaches and players in the U6 to U10 age groups.  No time was wasted as Sandi Sparks (formerly Potis) has accepted the role.  Sandi is a former UBC, Whitecaps/Breakers, and Toronto Lynx player.  She is presently the Head Coach of the Coastal WFC Super Y League U14 girls team, and has past experience coaching in the Whitecaps academy and camp program and with the Westside Player Development Academy (Vancouver).

Matt has already implemented a “coach education program” with 4 professional matches over the summer that Burnaby coaches attend to learn about match analysis.  The May 10 Whitecaps women’s game saw 12 BGSC coaches take part with 3 more matches to come this summer, the next one taking place on June 7.

Growing the team programs, individual player development opportunities, and running regular coach education sessions are key goals of the technical staff.  The summer will see Monday night free training for U11-U16 players in July, a “boot camp” specifically for pre-season team and individual prep work in August, and special nights for micro/mini players from U6 to U10 in August.

A new Burnaby Girls Soccer Academy will start in September, indoors at Canlan 8 Rinks for U9 through U12 players, and outdoors for U12 to U15 players.  This will be a high performance program running from September through March for competitive players wanting to develop individual technical skills in a progressive and challenging environment. BGSC will again be focusing on developing goalkeepers for who training will be free.

The online registration for these technical programs should be active by the end of June.

Watch the BGSC website http://www.burnabygirlssoccerclub.com for information on all of this and more!

A letter to all members of Burnaby Girls Soccer Club
A letter to all members of Burnaby Girls Soccer Club

To all the members of Burnaby Girls Soccer Club,

I would like to reassure everyone that in light of what has happened in the last couple of days with the resignation of our Technical Director Vladimir Samozvanov, Burnaby Girls is committed to making sure that all our programs are running and that tryouts are set and ready to go as planned.

Your club executive were as surprised as you must have been that Vladimir chose to end his paid contract position two months early and one week before our club tryouts.

Burnaby Girls Soccer Club would like to thank Vladimir for all his time and commitment to our club and the girls here at Burnaby Girls.  Vladimir ran all our technical programs and tryouts for the past two years and we know that he will be missed by the members of this club.

It is a shame that Vladimir felt that he had philosophical differences with our club philosophy of "A place for every girl to play".

Tryouts have been set and dates are now on the web and in the local papers.  We, your club executive have taken the necessary steps to ensure that the tryouts will run smoothly and efficiently.

We are extremely pleased to announce that your Burnaby Girls Soccer Club has engaged Matt Holbrook, former BGSC Technical Director and currently Development Manager of the Vancouver Whitecaps FC.  Matt was very gracious to come back as the BGSC Technical Advisor and will manage our club tryouts which begin next Wed April 2nd.

Please visit your club website for more details - http://www.burnabygirlssoccerclub.com

Sincerely

Sonia Dhaliwal

President

Everyone,
Our planning for the 2008 Field Hockey season has begun.

Field Hockey Canada (FHC) and Field Hockey BC (FHBC) now require athletes/coaches/umpires to register with them prior to registering with any club. Please visit: http://www.fieldhockeybc.com to obtain a FHBC membership number before proceeding with our registration process. The FHBC registration is valid from September 1st of any given year to the following August 31st. Micro Halloween 2007
Micro Halloween 2007

On October 28th, the BGSC U18 Crush hosted the annual Micro Soccer
Halloween Event at Canlan.

The event was attended by five U6 teams and
eight U7 teams dressed in Halloween attire. The Crush lead the teams
through a variety of stations with fun drills making it an enjoyable day
for all participants. Many thanks go to Judy Payne and the U18 Crush
for their efforts in organizing the event. The U18 Crush have set a
great example for all players in the Burnaby Girls Soccer Club and done
a wonderful job of mentoring the 'Micros'.

Here are some pictures from the event.

Micro Halloween Event
Micro Halloween Event Oct 28 2007

This year's Micro Soccer Halloween Event will take place on October
28th. The event will be hosted by the BGSC U18 Crush who will lead
the girls through a variety of stations with fun drills. The players
are to come in uniform but we encourage that the uniforms be
supplemented with costumes in creative ways (Butterflies with wings,
Dolphins with fins, etc.). The schedule of events for the day will be
as follows:

U6 Teams – 12:15 through 1:15

U7 Teams – 1:30 through 2:45

Coaches should bring the soccer balls because they will be required
for the drills. We ask that teams arrive early and are ready to get
started at the allotted time. The Crush have moved their game time so
that they could support this event; we encourage the coaches to
express their gratitude.

We would like to thank all of the coaches for their great work over
the past month and we have a couple of reminders:

· Please ensure that parents do not come on the field during
games (and the Halloween event); and

· The 2pm games should finish a few minutes early to allow
time for moving the small nets off of the field.

We hope you enjoy the Micro Soccer Halloween!

BGSC Donates Uniforms to Kenya
BGSC Donates Uniforms to Kenya

Keeping with the BGSC tradition of supporting soccer worldwide. Burnaby Girls Soccer Club donated hundreds of uniforms, soccer gear and balls to Kenya Project.

The website for the Kenya Project is http://www.thekenyaproject.com

This summer, two groups of six are going to Kenya to donate the soccer supplies to the village of Kanyawegi. Judy Sheane, BGSC equipment manager, said donating soccer uniforms to a good cause is something the club does on a regular basis.

"We do this all the time," Sheane said, adding that the club's used uniforms have been donated to countries such as Cuba and Guatemala. "Every three years we change our uniforms so that's where they go."

Sheane said most soccer clubs buy $25 uniforms every year, whereas the Burnaby Girls Soccer Club purchases better quality $50 uniforms every three years. That way, she said, the uniforms last longer and can be donated to others who need them.

"They can last for another few years," she said and added that the people of the village will likely wear the uniforms when not playing soccer.

Burnaby Girls Spring League!
Burnaby Girls 6 Aside Spring League kicks off on April 16 at the Confederation Mini Fields.

The Burnaby Girls Spring League will run from April 16 to June 25 at the Confederation Mini Fields.

The league is open to all U8+ players. Click here to register

Games are on Mondays from 6 to 8 pm. Younger group will have the early hour; older group will have the later one.

Mixed age teams are also welcome. This is an opportunity for you to play with your sister or friend who may be a year or two older or younger than you.

To register for the league, please bring a cheque for $30 payable to Burnaby Girls Soccer Club on any Monday from April 16 and onwards at 5:30 pm. Registration is subject to availability.

There are no referees, so participants will follow good sportsmanship rules. Coaches can bring their teams and make fair substitutions but will be asked not to coach them during the game. No score will be kept and obviously, no standings. Every player is a winner in this version of "good old street soccer".

After a long and rainy season, let's kick some fun under the sun!

See you in April at our league.

BGSC Technical Director
