September 19, 2009
I would like to welcome all club members to the 2009-2010 season. I hope the beginning of the season has gotten off to a great start. We can only hope the sun will be shining every Sunday.
Top of the list you may have heard the Provincial government has cut back on gaming funds allocated to youth sports in the Province. For the second year in a row, BGSC will not be receiving gaming funds. These funds in the past have been used to help subsidize the club costs on balls, equipment & uniforms. In our 2009/2010 budget, the club had allocated a large portion of the gaming funds to continue building our outstanding technical program. We will be sending a formal letter to the government, asking them to reconsider their decision.
To help offset the possibility that we will not receive these funds, the club executive has come up with two fundraising events that need the support of all members. Prior to Oct 9th you will be receiving more information regarding the following two club fundraising events from your age group coordinator or/& coach.
First, a BGSC pub night will be held Sat, Nov 28th @ the Old Admiral Pub in North Burnaby. The Club is looking for any prize donations for a silent auction. Even a team basket would help out with raising money for the club. Ticket info will be available shortly. Please contact your Age Group Coordinator if you can help out with donation or prizes.
Second, we will be selling raffle tickets that will benefit both the individual teams as well as the club. 50% of the ticket sales go directly to the teams selling the tickets. This is a great opportunity to raise money for parties or additional team gear, ie tracksuits. First prize will be a $2000 gift certificate from Expedia CruiseShipCenters for travel anywhere.
I would like to thank all the club executive, coaches, managers & other team volunteers for making this club the success that it is. Because of the continued efforts of all these people, our daughters have a place to play this great game.
Yours in Soccer Craig Roy President Burnaby Girls Soccer Club

Dear Club Members,
Burnaby Girls Soccer Club had a chance of a lifetime
opportunity to participate in the filming of a movie this past fall
starring George Lopez. Through the hard work of Dana Juba, Sue Tench
and Sheryl Kwai, our club received a donation of $8400 from the casting
company. Overall, approximately 70 players from 13 teams participated
over 4 dates in September and October. Special thanks to the coaches
of these teams for being so accommodating to allow BGSC to enhance the
profile of youth soccer in our community.
After considering many suggestions from club
members, our Club Executive passed a motion to give $100 per player who
participated with the cheques being made out to the team they play
on. The intent of these funds are to be put towards a soccer related
team event. Coaches and Managers of the team with participants can send
an email to treasurer@burnabygirlssoccerclub.com stating your team name and a list of players on your team that participated.
The player portion of the donation is just over 80%
of the total donation with the remaining funds going to the Club to be
used to improve our programs.
Thank you very much,
Leo -- Leo de Sousa Past President

BGSC Remembrance Day 7 Aside Tournament -Thank you!
|
|
Everyone,
I want to express my sincere thanks to
Sheryl Kwai and Sue Tench for leading and running our annual 7 Aside
tournament today. I was approached by several people from other clubs
expressing how impressed they were with our tournament. Some of the
quotes:
"This is the best run tournament we have ever been in." "Thank you to BGSC for running a fantastic tournament. Our girls had so much fun!" "I am so impressed by the organization of this tournament. Well done!"
"This is a great event and our players enjoyed all the activities ... fun, fun, fun!"
There were many more positive comments and it speaks to the organization, hard work and dedication of Sheryl and Sue.
I also want to thank all the other volunteers who
participated to make our tournament such a success. Your efforts
furthered the good reputation of our club in the soccer community!
Thank you very much, Leo -- Leo de Sousa Past President Burnaby Girls Soccer Club pastpresident@burnabygirlssoccerclub.com
